Nagesh Kukunoor hopes his next puts him back on track

Nagesh Kukunoor’s last two projects John Abraham starrer Aashayein and 8×10 Tasveer with Akshay Kumar proved to be duds. Yeh Hausla, which features Sameera Reddy in a deglam avatar, has yet to see light of day.

Woman-centric

Now the director hopes that his Ayesha Takia-Rannvijay-starrer Mod will put him back on track. He has wrapped up the project in a start-to-finish schedule.

The cast and crew had a wrap-up bash recently. With the film, the director returns to a woman-centric subject with his rakhi sister.

Cricket break

Says a source, “The film was shot in Ooty on a 52-day schedule. The cast and crew were put up in different hotels but made it a point to have their meals together in one hotel. They often played cricket matches in the spare time a remnant of his Iqbal days.”

Says Rannvijay who is looking forward to Mod, his next release after Action Replayy. “It is a small-town story and how things affect the characters that Ayesha and I essay.

Apart from Ooty, we also shot in Coonoor.”

He adds, “At the moment, the project is in post-production and a release date has yet to be ascertained.”
The film’s cast also includes Gulfam Khan, Usha Bachani and v.

Ayesha Takia gets back to acting

Ayesha Takia who has been lying low post her marriage has signed Nakesh Kukunoor’s film where she will be seen in a no makeup avatar.

You have seen her in a deglam look in Nagesh Kukunoor’s critically acclaimed ‘Dor’. Ayesha Takia will once again be seen sans any makeup in Nagesh Kukunoor’s next film. Ayesha has signed Nagesh Kukunoor’s next film.

Ayesha who was in talks with Nagesh since past few months has finally signed the film. “I am going to shoot for Nagesh Kukunoor’s film next month,” confirms Ayesha without giving much detail about the film.

Speaking about her look in the as yet untitled film, she informs that she will be seen in deglam avatar. She is going back to her black hair to get the perfect natural look. “There’s going to be a no makeup this time too. I have to get my hair back to black. It might be a nice change in color and I am looking forward to it,” said Ayesha who is excited to work again with Nagesh after Dor and 8 x 10 Tasveer .

This is going to be Ayesha’s third film with Nagesh. Nagesh’s Dor gave her recognition as an actress. Unfortunately 8 x 10 Tasveer couldn’t create the same magic on box office. Let’s see how his next film fares for Ayesha!

Ayesha Takia’s Coloring Woes

Post marriage, this beautiful lady was just seen with Salman Khan in WANTED. Ayesha’s fans are waiting to see her sizzle up the screen once again. But she is busy spending some quality time with her husband Farhan Azmi.

Ayesha Takia’s back thanks to hubby Farhan

Another one who is feeling wanted at the moment is Ayesha Takia. After she settled down into wedded bliss with hubby Farhan Azmi, she didn’t want the film industry to think she has quit acting. So she could forever be heard stressing that she was open to substantial film offers. Now isn’t that a bit ambitious considering such offers were few and far between even when she was at the best of her career. Clearly dearth of offers must have made Ayesha feel a bit unwanted. But then out of the blue I hear, Ayesha came across a script that completely blew her away.
A writer had written the actress-oriented film only keeping Ayesha in mind as she and I were told. And it was exactly the kind of script Ayesha saw herself doing at this point in time. The only hitch was that the writer was finding it difficult to find producers to back the project. That’s when her hubby Farhan stepped in, and from what I was told, he spoke to a few friends who were considering stepping into movie business. That was all the push that was needed and the film is ready to roll with Ayesha back in front of the arc lights

Biased Bollywood: Sexist dialogues mouthed by top actors

Recently several anti-women sentiments have been expressed in public purview — Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat and spiritual leader Asaram Bapu are some examples. But is cinema, also not equally culpable for reinforcing stereotypes? After all the debate that we've had about Bollywood's portrayal of women, we list some of the mysogynistic dialogues by the A-listers in the industry.

Dabangg

Salman Khan starrer Dabangg (2010) shows Salman Khan as a chauvinist cop, who tries to woo his love interest Sonakshi Sinha. Despite her disinterest, Chulbul Pandey keeps talking to her and in one of the conversations where he gives her money for the pots, when she refuses, he replies: pyar se de rahe hai, rakh lo, varna thappad maarke bhi de sakte hai.

How can a cop ever talk to a young woman like this? Isn't it sending a message that because Salman Khan can say it, it is cool?

Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam

A 2002 release, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam has some similar offensive comments. The film revolves around Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, who are happily married until Madhuri's childhood friend Salman Khan enters. Shah Rukh Khan plays the jealous husband, who doesn't like a male friend's presence in his wife's life.

There is a dialogue where Shah Rukh Khan tells Madhuri Dixit: Tum ek patni ho...Tumhara pati jaisa chahega vaisa hi hoga...Yeh shaadi ka dastoor hai...; Sirf bistar par sona hi ek patni ka farz nahin hai. Man se man milna chahiye...; Ghar se bahar jane wali auratein hi badchalan nahin hoti. Ghar ki baatein bahar le jaane wali bhi badchalan hoti hain...; Mard aurat ka bhagwan hota hai.

Kambakkht Ishq

Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor starrer Kambakkht Ishq faced flak at the time of it's release. The film contains one of the most sexist comments ever: "You girls are good only for one thing." Another dialogue that's been axed, thankfully, is Marriage se pehle ladkiyan sex object hoti hain aur marriage ke baad they object to sex.

The Dirty Picture

Vidya Balan starrer The Dirty Picture is about a star who is into B-grade film business. The kind of dialogues the protagonist utters are offensive, all the same. In one of the scenes, while talking to her co-star, Vidya Balan says: Aise mat dekho, lagta hai marinated murgi ko tandoor dekh raha hai.

Aamdani Athani Kharcha Rupaiyaa

The 2001 release shows women as victims. In one of the scenes, Johnny Lever tells his wife: Mard kab peeta hai, kya peeta hai, kaise peeta hai, yeh jaankaari rakhna Bharatiya naari ka sabse important duty hai.

Not only films but Bollywood songs also show women as an object of desire.

It's a done-to-death cliché that Bollywood is a second religion in our country. One rhetoric question — Can't filmmakers be more sensible while scripting such insensitive scenes. Celebrities like Salman and Shah Rukh Khan are demigods with a following which is perhaps not quite countable. Can't they become agents of change?

But there are some directors,  who are portraying women in balanc- ed roles, also. Bollywood is, albeit in small measure, witnessing a change with more layered cinema. Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, Ayan Mukherjee, Shoojit Sircar are there to name a few.

Dor

Both Ayesha Takia and Gul Panag are shown as two confident women coming from different backgrounds.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Director Zoya Akhtar again has shown Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin in much stronger roles. They are independent, smart and confident women.

Luck By Chance

Konkona Sen's role in the film is of a strong-headed woman, who after being dumped by her selfish boyfriend played by Farhan Akhtar, doesn't go back to him even after he apologizes.

No One Killed Jessica

Rani Mukherji and Vidya Balan have played two very different roles. One is playing a journalist (Rani Mukherji), who follows the path of truth and knows exactly what she wants; another one (Vidya Balan) plays the victim's              sister, who keeps fighting for her till the end.

Shanghai

Kalki Koechlin in yet another role plays a young student, who is inspired by a Bengali politician. She goes all out to find the footage against the culprit in the film.

Hookah has plenty of fans in Fullerton

         Fullerton has two hookah lounges that offer the Middle Eastern practice.

FULLERTON – Hookah aficionados have plenty of choices on where they partake of water-cooled bowls of flavored tobacco – called shisha – with names such as tiger's blood, Arabian nights and sex panther.

Practiced in the Middle East for centuries, hookah smoking has become popular in the U.S. in recent years.

One online database lists 35 establishments in Orange County that offer hookah, including two in Fullerton. Anaheim tops the list with 10.

A few are Middle Eastern restaurants offering hookah as an added amenity, but most are hookah lounges. Common touches: big-screen televisions, recorded music wafting about and Internet access.

Shawn Abdalla, who owns the Twilight Loungeon Chapman Avenue in Fullerton, said a hookah lounge is like a "big living room."

Typically, a hookah pipe is shared between two customers who order two separate flavors of shisha, said Nadia Abdalla, Shawn's wife.

In the Twilight, a usual hookah session for a pair lasts 1½ hours and costs about $20, soft drinks included.

Abraham Appel, 34, of Fullerton, has found a home at the Twilight Lounge.

He said the hookah lounge is a "sober bar."

"When you go to a bar that serves liquor, you see the worst side of people," Appel said. "When you come here, you see the real side and the good side of people."

Hookah bars are a staple of Middle Eastern life, as well as in American cities with large Arab populations, according to a December article in The New York Times.

The article also cited a 2008 study of nearly 3,800 students at eight universities in North Carolina that revealed more than 40 percent had smoked a hookah at least once.

The American Lung Association, in a 2007 report, called hookah use a "dangerous trend" and said water-pipe smoking "carries many of the same health risks and has been linked to many of the same diseases caused by cigarette smoking."

Shisha, which is simply tobacco combined with molasses and flavoring, and smoked in a hookah, comes in a variety of flavors. Many are standards, such as cherry, pineapple, grape, raspberry and blueberry. Then there are the more exotic offerings with monikers to match.
